Kansas City Chiefs receiver Rashee Rice has filed for bankruptcy in the Northern District of Texas, reporting about $3.45 million in unpaid debts. That comes despite roughly $6 million in career earnings, and with free agency approaching in 2027, when he could be in line for a significant new contract.
Rice’s filing points to legal costs and settlements as major factors in his financial situation. He reports having just over $13,000 in his checking account and about $677,000 in personal assets. He says he owes more than $1.8 million in settlements and legal fees, rents his home, and has used his Super Bowl ring as collateral to cover legal expenses.
The listed settlements include nearly $980,000 connected to the 2024 Dallas car crash Rice caused. He pleaded guilty to charges related to a collision causing serious bodily injury and to racing on a highway causing bodily injury. The filing also lists $700,000 owed to two other people involved in the crash, and $200,000 tied to a civil lawsuit filed by Rice’s former girlfriend, who alleges physical and emotional abuse.
The filing does not make clear who is owed the rest of the debt, which totals roughly $2 million.
Rice’s play on the field could help him secure another NFL contract, likely worth considerably more than his rookie deal. His legal troubles, though, may limit what he can earn. Over the summer, he was sentenced to 30 days in jail in Dallas after testing positive for THC, in violation of probation stemming from the 2024 crash.
At 26, Rice is facing serious financial pressure, and his Super Bowl ring is no longer in his possession. For someone who has earned about $6 million over four years, it’s a difficult position to be in.
