GAres Southgate said. When the England manager announced his squad for Wembley’s friendlies against Brazil and Belgium, he said Marcus Rashford and Jack Grealish were in the running for Euro 2024, calling out the next generation of wide attackers, particularly Anthony Gordon.・Revealed that it is facing competition from Palmer. There was also a notable name check for Jarrod Bowen.
It was easy for Southgate to fall back on those words once the dust settled on an international window defined by the mess of injuries and the usual debates over who was advancing their cause and who they were hurting. And to deal with another round that was not encouraging, especially for Rashford.
It was a test few games for Rashford. Rashford is a player who only seems to cope with the wildest extremes. Southgate preferred Gordon on the left in Saturday’s 1-0 defeat to Brazil and liked the way the Newcastle player imposed himself on his debut. Rashford came on in his place in the 75th minute, but his struggles were dire, with poor final action and too many turnovers.
Southgate started Phil Foden on the left and Bowen on the right against Belgium, and both impressed. With England trailing 2-1, it was time for a substitution, but Rashford didn’t get the call. Southgate slotted James Maddison into the number 10 role, removed standout Koby Mainu and moved Jude Bellingham back into a 4-2-3-1 alongside Declan Rice. Gordon then moved to the left for Bowen, with Foden switching to the right but still having license to roam inside, with Ollie Watkins replacing Ivan Toney up front.
Maddison and Watkins were central to Bellingham’s last equaliser, with Southgate highlighting the impact of all the attacking changes, along with Bowen’s “great game”. Palmer was cleared of his involvement on grounds of medical doubts only.
So where did Rashford stand after that, Southgate was asked. Was the Manchester United player vulnerable? “Well, I wanted to meet Gordon,” Southgate replied. “Marcus did well in his first game, but I would have liked to have seen Gordon again. [against Belgium]. I thought the addition of Madison could make an impact, and Bowen had a really good camp as well. So there is competition for space. When we named the team, we said there would be competition for positions in that wide area.
“It’s a bit disappointing that Palmer missed so much training that we couldn’t get him into the game at that stage because he was out for most of the week. I didn’t know 100 percent. Whereas with Gordon, I knew, and with Madison, I knew. I’m not going to take Palmer out of the equation either.”
Sometimes it’s about what managers don’t say when faced with straightforward questions. In this case, Southgate had little involvement in the Rashford situation. It was certainly a contrast when applied to Grealish, who was sidelined through injury and has retreated from the spotlight.
“He’s definitely not inconceivable,” Southgate said. “I spoke to him before I named this team. He’s back in training, but I didn’t think he’d reach the physical level where he could compete in these games. But when I named this team, Like, Gordon and Bowen are pushing them. And Palmer.”
Also, what I felt was important was Southgate’s reaction to the suggestion that Rashford didn’t play in the game against Belgium because of a minor bruise. “No,” he said. “I wanted to see Gordon again. I thought he had a great impact in the first game. And I thought if Madison could come into that area, things might open up a little bit for us.”

Maddison kicked his heels on the bench against Brazil, desperately trying to get into the game. And he wanted to play with Bellingham and Foden, not either. So it worked. All three would probably cite the number 10 role as their favorite. But Madison says they have shown they can work together. Southgate had previously used him on the left flank.
“Jude talked a little more deeply,” Madison said. “Phil is very strong left and right and can drift. They don’t all line up in the middle. If you have smart players, they won’t get in each other’s way as long as they have the right pattern. A few times I went a little deeper and made a pass to Phil in position 10.
“What’s it like for me on the bench? I’m very, very, very grumpy, that’s the first thing I want to say. But once you accept that…I’m experienced now. Young Back then, on the odd occasion, I would slump. I would get grumpy. Now that I’m older, I just evaluate the game and think about where I can make an impact.
“There was quite a bit of space between the lines and that was where I wanted to play. So I was thinking: ‘Come on, Gareth…’ Their midfield started very strong, but they looked tired, so I was sure I could make an impact. So I researched small pockets, worked it out, and managed to make it work. ”
How Southgate will build a three-man line behind the striker at this summer’s European Championship will be endlessly debated. Bukayo Saka, who has withdrawn from the team due to injury, remains the first choice on the right wing. Is the manager’s treatment of Rashford an attempt to get more out of him?
It has been an often difficult season for Rashford, with several controversial raunchy nights out and a significant drop in numbers and form from 2022 to 2023. Although this talent only blossomed suddenly, a truism remains. Ignoring him is a very dangerous game.
