Raskin calls on GOP to end Biden impeachment inquiry after indictment of FBI informant

Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) urges House Republicans to end their impeachment inquiry into President Biden following the indictment of an FBI informant at the center of allegations in the meeting that the president accepted bribes. I am calling on you to do so.

Raskin’s statement, the top Democrat on the House Oversight Committee, came shortly after the Department of Justice (DOJ) announced the indictment of Alexander Smirnov, 43, on charges of fabricating allegations about Biden. He was charged with making false statements and creating false and fictitious records as part of an investigation led by Special Counsel David Weiss.

Republicans cited conversations between Mr. Smirnov, previously known only as a confidential source, and the FBI, in which the head of Ukrainian energy company Burisma gave Mr. Biden and his son Hunter Biden 500 dollars each. He said he was informed that he had paid $10,000. This is to avoid scrutiny of his company. These allegations are at the heart of Republicans’ claims that the president took bribes.

“Special Counsel David Weiss, appointed by former President Donald Trump, demonstrated in a detailed indictment how key evidence at the center of the House Republicans’ impeachment inquiry is based on lies.” he said. “Special Counsel Weiss’ investigation is the latest effort to debunk the Ukraine Burisma conspiracy theory at the center of this corrupt impeachment inquiry.”

“It is an undeniable fact that the Republican Party’s claims against President Biden have always been a fabric of lies built on conspiracy theories, and I call on Speaker Johnson, Speaker Comer, and the House Republicans to promote this nonsense. “We formally request that the United States cease its actions and end this disastrous impeachment inquiry,” he added.

House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-Ky.) fired back at Mr. Raskin, calling him “an unparalleled record that demands an end to our investigation from the day it began.”

“He can’t be trusted,” Comer said, later adding: “The American people demand truth and accountability for all wrongdoing. We will continue to track the facts, propose legislation to reform federal ethics laws, and determine whether articles of impeachment are warranted.” .”

Smirnov’s claims about the Bidens are documented in the FBI FD-1023 format, which memorializes information from sources and relays a conversation with Mykola Zlochevsky, CEO and founder of Burisma. .

Although the FBI has not corroborated the information provided by Mr. Smirnov, Republicans have nonetheless cited it several times when discussing Mr. Biden’s impeachment inquiry. In July, Republicans released a copy of the form.

Zlochevsky later appears to have refuted this claim for information. provided to parliament Rudy Giuliani’s interaction with his colleague Vitaly Prus was captured during Trump’s impeachment.

Republicans are trying to link Smirnov’s claims to then-Vice President Joe Biden’s attempt to fire Ukraine’s prosecutor, who was criticized by the international community for not doing enough to fight corruption.

Biden, then President Obama’s No. 2, made a $1 billion loan guarantee to Ukraine a condition for replacing state prosecutor Viktor Shokin. Republicans argue that the loan guarantee was beneficial to Burisma and, by extension, to Hunter Biden, who served on the company’s board. However, this theory has been dismissed as an earlier investigation into Burisma has been put on hold and new prosecutors risk increasing scrutiny of the company.

The scope of the investigation is broad and includes the Biden family’s personal and corporate finances, as well as a Justice Department investigation into Hunter Biden’s tax failures.

Comer dismissed the significance of Smirnov’s indictment in relation to the impeachment inquiry, insisting that the investigation “does not rely” on information from FBI informants.

“To be clear, the impeachment inquiry does not rely on the FBI’s FD-1023. It is based on a large body of evidence, including bank records and witness testimony, that suggests Joe Biden knew about his family’s business dealings. “It’s clear that he was involved in the process,” Comer said.

He also said the FBI told the committee that the informant was “trustworthy, trustworthy, had worked with the FBI for more than a decade, and received a six-figure compensation.”

“The FBI’s actions in this matter are deeply disturbing,” he continued. “Although the FBI had this document in its possession for years, it appears that it did nothing to verify the problematic claims contained in the record until Congress became aware of it and requested access.”

But the indictment notes that Smirnov received “repeated warnings” to provide truthful information to the FBI.

Authorities arrested Smirnov on Wednesday at Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas, Nevada, after he arrived in the United States from overseas. He could be sentenced to up to 25 years in prison.
