Raskin Suggests Room for Greene in Democratic Party
Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) stated that the Democratic Party is open to Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.), who has recently become more critical of her own party. This remark was met with a mix of boos from attendees at the 2025 Blue Bash Brunch fundraiser in Miami.
Raskin emphasized that the Democratic Party has a broad tent that welcomes all individuals who are dedicated to upholding the Constitution. “Great Florida Democrats, let me just add a few thoughts,” he mentioned. “One point is that we need to be an expansive tent.”
When he suggested Greene could join, the audience reacted with mixed emotions. “There’s a place for anyone who supports the Constitution and the Bill of Rights,” he said.
The crowd responded negatively to Raskin’s suggestion, as Greene has been a well-known figure in conservative circles and a staunch supporter of former President Trump until their recent fallout.
Greene has faced criticism from Republican leadership over various issues, including health care. Moreover, she has publicly disagreed with party leaders regarding Israel, labeling its military actions in Gaza as “genocide.”
She has also clashed with Trump, who expressed disappointment in her. He recently referred to her as a traitor after withdrawing his support, a claim Greene dismissed, stating she was targeted to intimidate Republicans ahead of a critical vote.
In her defense, Greene remarked, “I remain committed to supporting the administration’s success because the American people deserve it.”
Raskin encouraged Democrats to embrace a wide range of ideological perspectives within the party. He described himself as a “liberal” and “progressive” due to his support for various freedoms and social advancements.
“Today, I prefer to identify as a conservative because I aim to protect our land, air, water, and climate, alongside vital social programs and rights.” He expressed concern about the authoritarian threats to these values, asserting, “We are the party that includes conservatives, liberals, and progressives. All patriots today belong to the party of democracy.”
