Raskin: Trump has fulfilled ‘worst fears and nightmares’ of founders with foreign spending at businesses

Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.), ranking member of the House Oversight Committee, appeared on MSNBC's “Morning Joe” on Friday and revealed that former President Trump's business received at least $7.8 million from foreign companies in 20 countries. They discussed the Democratic Party's recent report that they are receiving . He was in the White House.

“The framers of our Constitution feared that the president or other federal officials or members of Congress would sell out American interests by accepting money from foreign governments and doing their bidding.” Raskin said in comments from Mika Brzezinski. Highlighted by Mediaite. “And Donald Trump has fulfilled the founders' worst fears and nightmares.”

Democrats on the oversight panel found that the roughly $8 million in payments Trump received may violate the Constitution's ban on accepting funds from foreign governments. The bulk of the payments, about $5.6 million, came from China and were sent to Trump's hotels in Washington and Las Vegas, as well as Trump Tower in New York, the report said.

Raskin said the report covered only two of Trump's four years in office, related to only four of Trump's more than 500 businesses, and was able to investigate only He warned that the total number was likely to be even higher, as there were only 20 countries. Still, it shows that foreign governments and agents made direct payments to Trump-owned companies while Trump was in the White House.

“So this is likely just a fraction of what he ingested,” Raskin said. “Yet, like every other president in American history, our nation's founders will be thoroughly scandalized.”

“This was a money-making objective from the beginning. We are just beginning to uncover the millions of dollars he collected from the government,” he continued.

Raskin said his Republican colleagues who have launched an impeachment inquiry into President Biden's family business dealings are turning a blind eye to “documented receipts made during the Trump administration.”

The Maryland Democratic Party noted that there have been many times in history when presidents have accepted gifts or funds from other countries and turned them down. He asked Trump, the front-runner for the Republican presidential nomination, to repay $7.8 million.

“And here we have Trump extorting millions of dollars directly from some of the most corrupt regimes on the planet who wanted certain things, and he just continues on his merry way. “That's all,” Raskin said, adding that the report outlines how Trump acted. Funding from foreign governments “definitely influenced” what President Trump did regarding China and Saudi Arabia.
