Rassie Erasmus hospitalized with chemical burns after ‘freak accident’

The accident left South African rugby director Rassie Erasmus hospitalized with chemical burns.

According to one report, Rassie Erasmus, 51, suffered burns in a “freak accident involving the use of strong detergent products.” South African Rugby Union releases a statement.

He is recovering in hospital after being treated for burns and “plans to return to full-time work within the next few weeks” and is “otherwise in good health.”

Erasmus led South Africa to their third Rugby World Cup victory in 2019.

He took over as manager ahead of the 2023 World Cup in Japan, and the Springboks won the title again, defeating New Zealand in the final, under coach Jack Nienaber.

Ninavar resigned after winning the World Cup to take over Irish club Leinster.

Erasmus is expected to resume coaching South Africa this year in preparation for the 2027 Games.

South Africa are not scheduled to play again until July when they face Ireland in back-to-back games in Pretoria and Durban.

Erasmus became a legendary player during his eight-year career, winning 36 Test caps and scoring seven goals for the Springboks.

He played for the Cheetahs and Golden Lions in the Currie Cup and the Cats and Stormers in the Super 12s.
