Raiders Disappointed as Ravens Withdraw from Crosby Trade
The Las Vegas Raiders revealed on Tuesday that the Baltimore Ravens have decided to pull out of a significant trade that would have sent star pass rusher Maxx Crosby to Baltimore in exchange for two first-round picks.
This turn of events is quite surprising and appears to be a rare occurrence given the caliber of players and draft picks at stake.
The statement from the Raiders didn’t go into detail about the reasons behind the Ravens backing out, which left fans and analysts wondering.
However, Diana Russini from The Athletic mentioned that the Ravens’ decision was related to Crosby’s physical condition.
According to NFL regulations, trades cannot be finalized until a player successfully passes a physical examination. Crosby had knee surgery after last season, which adds another layer of complexity.
The Raiders recently made significant roster moves, operating under the assumption that they had adequate salary cap space once Crosby was no longer part of the team. This sudden breakdown of the deal puts both Las Vegas and Baltimore in a rather uncomfortable situation. The Ravens, for their part, released several key players to make room for Crosby’s anticipated arrival.
Additionally, the Raiders are now left without two first-round picks they had expected to trade away.
This isn’t the first time the Ravens have backed out of a notable trade. As reported by Adam Schefter, they previously halted a deal to acquire Brock Marion from the Cowboys back in 1997, although that was due to indecision on general manager Eric DeCosta’s part.
What’s intriguing about this situation is that the Raiders framed the trade’s collapse as Baltimore’s choice to withdraw. If the reason was Crosby failing his physical, it raises questions about why they wouldn’t simply say that. It almost feels as if the Ravens’ interest has cooled unexpectedly.
It’s certainly possible that the Ravens have indeed cooled off. Notably, they are the only NFL team that has never traded a first-round pick. On the other hand, the fact that they were willing to part with two first-round picks for Crosby indicates how serious their interest was, which somewhat undermines the claim that they might be backing away.
The Ravens were aware of Crosby’s knee surgery in January and still presented the offer, which makes the situation even more puzzling.
Two potential explanations could shed light on Baltimore’s actions: A) Crosby’s knee injury might be worse than initially believed, despite reassurances from the Raiders, or B) his medical evaluation could reveal something significant, like a positive test for a banned substance.
One thing is clear: this story is far from over.
