The Baltimore Ravens have decided to part ways with their long-time kicker, Justin Tucker, describing the move as “a football decision.” This comes on the heels of drafting Tyler Loop from Arizona in the sixth round, particularly after a less-than-stellar season for Tucker, who has been a reliable player for many years.
Complicating matters, Tucker is facing allegations from 16 massage therapists across eight different wellness centers in Baltimore, with claims of inappropriate behavior dating between 2012 and 2016.
Tucker has vehemently denied these accusations, labeling them as “explicitly false” in a social media statement. Ravens’ executive vice president and general manager, Eric DeCosta, expressed that making such decisions can be challenging, noting that they felt compelled to release Tucker due to current roster dynamics. He acknowledged the positive impact Tucker has had over the years, emphasizing his talent and crucial moments in Ravens’ history.
As the Ravens made this move, speculation immediately arose regarding Tucker’s future with the team. At 35, Tucker’s performance last season was below his usual standard, with a field goal success rate of just 73.3%. Yet, he still boasts the highest career field goal percentage in NFL history at 89.1%.
Last season, he converted 22 out of 30 field goal attempts but faltered on six attempts from over 50 yards and missed two extra points. His situation for the upcoming season may be further complicated by the ongoing allegations.
During a recent meeting, Ravens President Sashi Brown shared thoughts on the allegations against Tucker, stressing the importance of a thorough investigation without a set timeline for its conclusion. The initial reports from the Baltimore Banner indicated that the accusations involve claims made over a span of four years, dating back to Tucker’s rookie season.
A first wave of six therapists came forward, followed by seven additional women, bringing the total to 16, with similar claims reported by all. Tucker has maintained his commitment to professionalism throughout his career, asserting that he has never faced complaints during therapy sessions.
