Giants Remember Former Coach Ray Hundley

The New York Giants are reflecting on the passing of former assistant coach and later head coach Ray Hundley, who has died at the age of 81.

Rob Hundley, a member of his family, confirmed the news. The specifics surrounding the cause of his death have not been disclosed as of yet.

Hundley began his journey with the Giants in 1984, taking on the role of an assistant under head coach Bill Parcells. Over seven years, as the offensive backfield coach, he significantly contributed to the team’s two Super Bowl victories.

Following the Giants’ second championship, Parcells stepped down, leading to Hundley’s promotion to head coach in 1991. It was a challenging start for Hundley, particularly when he decided to choose Jeff Hostetler over Phil Simms as the starting quarterback during training camp. Simms had been recovering from a foot injury, and Hostetler eventually led the team during their Super Bowl run.

In his first season as head coach, the Giants ended with a record of 8-8. However, the following season saw a disappointing decline to 6-10. After the 1992 season, Hundley was let go and replaced by Dan Reeves, who had previously coached the Denver Broncos.

Before his time with the Giants, Hundley held assistant coaching roles at Army, Stanford, and Air Force. After his tenure with New York, he stepped away from coaching altogether.

Interestingly, Hundley was also a running back at Stanford University before entering the coaching world.
