Rachel “RaeGun” Gunn’s Australian Olympic teammate, Jeff “J Attack” Dunn, has entered the fray to defend fellow breakdancer Rachel Gunn’s heavily criticised performance at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Gunn’s “kangaroo dance,” among other dance moves, earned her a zero when the sport of breaking debuted on the world stage, sparking an intense backlash against her.
However, Dan fired back in the comments. Australian media: The Herald Sun.
“What I know is that she represented Australia hard and was one of the top female breakers in Australia. I recognise her and have 100 per cent respect for her,” Dunn said.
Still, criticism has been mounting since she competed last Friday, with her dance moves going viral on social media and quickly becoming a laughing stock on late-night TV.
During the Olympics broadcast of “The Tonight Show” on NBC, comedian Jimmy Fallon parodied Gunn’s performance with fellow comedian Rachel Dratch.
New York breakdancing pioneer Richard “Crazy Legs” Colon called for an investigation into how Gunn was allowed to compete in the Summer Olympics.
Gunn broke her silence in a video posted to social media on Thursday, attempting to speak out about the backlash she’s received since joining the sport.
“I never expected it would incur so much hate and, frankly, it’s been pretty devastating,” she said in the video. “I enjoyed competing in the Olympics but I took it seriously. I prepared so hard for the Olympics and really gave it my all. I was honoured to be part of the Australian Olympic team and take part in breaking’s Olympic debut. The achievements of the other athletes were phenomenal.”
The controversy has escalated to the point where nearly 50,000 people have signed a Change.org petition demanding an explanation for how Gunn qualified for the Olympics in the first place.
