Colts Legend Raymond Berry Passes Away at 93

The Indianapolis Colts announced on social media the passing of Raymond Berry, a revered figure in NFL history, at the age of 93.

Jim Porter, the Hall of Fame President, remarked that while Berry wasn’t the tallest or fastest receiver in the league, his dedication to improving his skills was unmatched. “Nobody worked harder to refine his craft,” he said. The synergy he forged with quarterback Johnny Unitas through countless practice hours was instrumental on game days.

The duo played a crucial role in leading the Colts to consecutive championships in the late 1950s, including the famous 1958 NFL Championship Game, a pivotal moment that elevated pro football’s popularity in America. Berry was also celebrated for his humility, maintaining a down-to-earth demeanor despite the fame that surrounded him.

Beyond his playing career, Berry made a significant impact as a head coach, steering the New England Patriots to their inaugural Super Bowl appearance in 1985 against the Chicago Bears.

Patriots owner Robert Kraft commended Berry’s lasting influence on the franchise. “Raymond Berry holds a special place in Patriots history,” he expressed.

Kraft reflected on personal memories, recalling a trip to Israel with other Hall of Famers in 2015, sharing moments with Berry and his son Mark. He described Berry as a “gentleman in every way”—humble, loyal, and deeply respected. The Patriots organization joins in mourning his passing, sending thoughts and prayers to the Berry family and all those affected by this loss.

During his 13 seasons, Berry recorded 631 receptions for 9,275 yards and 68 touchdowns. While these statistics may seem modest compared to today’s standards, they represented a remarkable accomplishment for his era.

Berry is survived by three children and nine grandchildren.
