Rays bullpen experiences a disappointing collapse late as Cleveland overwhelms Tampa Bay in Game 1.

Cleveland Guardians Triumph Over Tampa Bay Rays in ALCS Game 1

The Tampa Bay bullpen seemed to wear down late on Monday night. After a lengthy seven innings of back-and-forth action in St. Petersburg, the Cleveland Guardians surged ahead, scoring five runs in the final two innings to clinch Game 1 of the ALCS with a final score of 7-3.

The Rays struck first. In the opening inning, with two outs, Junior Caminero and Jonny DeLuca both managed to get RBI hits, putting Tampa Bay ahead 2-0. Rays starting pitcher Drew Rasmussen held onto that lead effectively through five innings, recording seven strikeouts along the way.

It wasn’t until the sixth that the Guardians managed to break through. Chase DeLauter took a fastball and sent a solo home run soaring over the right-center wall, putting Cleveland on the board.

In the seventh, Patrick Bailey leveled the score, leading off with a solo home run down the right-field line, ending Rasmussen’s evening at 2-2.

Things heated up for Cleveland in the eighth inning against pitchers Tyler Wells and Ian Seymour. José Ramírez kicked things off with a hard-fought infield single, and DeLauter followed with a double down the line. Nathaniel Lowe then came through with a key two-run single, pushing the score to 4-2.

But Tampa Bay didn’t back down. In the bottom of the eighth, pinch-hitter Cedric Mullins took Erik Sabrowski deep with a solo home run, narrowing the gap to 4-3.

Then José Ramírez stepped up and effectively ended the contest. Following a stellar 3-for-5 night with two runs scored, he hit an RBI single to right field off Cole Sulser, extending the lead to 5-3. After Sulser issued a walk to DeLauter, Kevin Kelly came in to face Jo Adell, who capitalized by hitting a two-run double down the third-base line, sealing the deal for a final score of 7-3.

Cleveland racked up 14 hits against six pitchers from Tampa Bay, with Ramírez and DeLauter combining for an impressive six hits overall, before Cade Smith wrapped things up with an efficient six-pitch outing.

The Rays entered the matchup feeling high after sweeping the Yankees but left the field with mounting pressure as they look ahead. Game 2 is scheduled for Tuesday night at Tropicana Field.
