Tampa Bay Rays Fight Back in World Series
The Tampa Bay Rays found themselves in a tough spot on Tuesday night, trailing 3-0 in the World Series—a daunting situation for any team. Yet, they managed to secure their first victory of the series, defeating the Milwaukee Brewers in a thrilling extra-inning match.
Historically, only one team in Major League Baseball has come back from a 3-0 deficit to win a series: the 2004 Boston Red Sox, who famously overcame the New York Yankees in the American League Championship Series. The Red Sox went on to claim the title, effectively ending the “Curse of the Bambino.”
Tampa Bay’s victory in Game 4 places them among a select group of teams. They became just the fourth franchise in World Series history to stave off elimination with a comeback in extra innings, joining the ranks of the 1912 Red Sox, the 1986 New York Mets, and the 2011 St. Louis Cardinals, all of whom ultimately went on to win the championship. However, it’s worth noting that none of those teams faced a 3-0 deficit like the Rays did.
“We’ve got a lot of fight in us. We’re never going to shy away,” said Rays outfielder Chandler Simpson. “We’ll keep pushing until the very end—through every inning, every out, every pitch.”
Entering the bottom of the 12th inning down 3-2, the Rays capitalized on an error by the Brewers, allowing them to load the bases and gain crucial momentum.
Ben Williamson then delivered when it mattered most, hitting a single to bring Nick Fortes home. “This showcases our resilience,” Williamson remarked. “We just keep fighting, that’s been our motto throughout this series and the entire season.”
However, clinching Game 5 will be a significant challenge. The Brewers’ two-time All-Star and National League Cy Young Award frontrunner, Jacob Misiorowski, will take the mound. He previously limited the Rays to just one run on four hits in five innings during their Game 1 encounter.
As the series progresses, Misiorowski holds the potential to either secure a win for his team or create some apprehension surrounding what could become a historic comeback for the Rays.
