Rays Demote Taj Bradley After Disappointing Performance

The Tampa Bay Rays have made the decision to demote pitcher Taj Bradley following a lackluster outing against the Chicago White Sox. During this game, the Rays initially held a 4-0 lead but faltered dramatically, ultimately losing 11-9. This prompted the team to send Bradley back to Triple-A Durham shortly after his poor performance on Wednesday night.

Manager Kevin Cash acknowledged the difficulty of the decision, saying it was essential for Bradley to focus on his skills at this stage. “We discussed his pitch mixes, and I think it’s probably a better environment for him to work on those instead of facing top-level competition,” he mentioned.

Cash further emphasized Bradley’s importance to the team’s success, noting the need for him to regain his former effectiveness. “We know Taj can be a big part of our success if he can just get back to what he can do,” he added.

Bradley, who was once seen as a top pitching prospect, had a rocky entry into the major leagues. In his debut season in 2023, he made 21 starts but finished with a 5.59 ERA. While he showed improvement the following year with a 4.11 ERA, his current performance seems to have plateaued.

On Wednesday, he allowed four hits and walked three batters in his short outing. Despite some earlier success—where he allowed just four runners over 17 innings in his last three starts—this recent inconsistency has raised concerns for the 24-year-old pitcher.

Bradley himself expressed a recognition of his need for improvement, stating, “I know I need a third pitch, specifically the change-up, to complement what I have right now.” He seems determined to refine his skills during this demotion and return stronger.

In his last month, Bradley recorded a 5.72 ERA over six starts, indicating that while there were peaks, the valleys have certainly overshadowed them lately.

With a record of 53-50, the Rays are in a tight race for playoff spots and are clearly seeking to address issues like Bradley’s inconsistency as they push forward in the season.
