Rays’ Wander Franco’s future in limbo as Dominican officials weigh next steps

Prosecutors in the Dominican Republic presented evidence to a judge Wednesday regarding allegations against Tampa Bay Rays shortstop Wander Franco, who is accused of having an affair with a minor.

According to Spanish-language media, Franco is scheduled to appear before a judge on Friday at 8 a.m. local time.

A judge will review evidence compiled by prosecutors over several months against Franco and is scheduled to hand down a verdict on Friday in the northern Dominican Republic's Puerto Plata state.

Dominican newspapers Diario Libre and Listin Diario have reported that prosecutors have filed documents with the court asking for “coercive measures” against Franco, including 5 million pesos, or about 86,000 dollars in dollars. The paper also requested that the mother of the accused minor be placed under house arrest.

Franco has remained detained at the National Police headquarters in Puerto Plata since Monday afternoon, according to multiple reports.

He was originally scheduled to appear in court this Thursday. But he never showed up. Franco arrived at the Puerto Plata prosecutor's office on Monday with his lawyer, reportedly seeking information about an investigation into his alleged relationship with a minor.

He was taken into custody after a three-hour interrogation with prosecutors, an official said on condition of anonymity.

On December 26, police visited two of Franco's properties in his hometown of Bani, but Franco was not there. Franco's wife was left with a message telling her to contact the authorities.

Prosecutors have not released any details regarding the investigation into Franco, but prosecutors announced on August 14 that they would investigate the Rays All-Star for social media posts suggesting he had a relationship with a minor.

Franco appeared to deny the allegations via Instagram Live, but has not spoken publicly about the situation since.

MLB immediately placed Franco on administrative leave under the MLBPA's joint Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault, and Child Abuse Policy. MLB is also conducting its own investigation into this matter, and no conclusions have yet been reached.

Franco signed an 11-year, $182 million contract to become a cornerstone of the Rays' roster after rising through the ranks as one of MLB's most promising players.

Franco was named to the AL All-Star team in July of this year, marking the first time in the career of many up-and-coming stars.
