Jordan Spieth nearly walked off the golf course after hitting a bunker shot on the 13th hole at Harbor Town during the first round of the RBC Heritage.
His follow-through crashed into the trap’s bulkhead, wrist tendon pops outaccording to Paul Hodwanik of the PGA Tour.
“It’s something that happens over and over again,” Spieth said Friday at RBC Heritage.
“We were lucky because most of the time we couldn’t go out and turn it and we might have failed. [extensor carpi ulnaris] tendon. It came out and got right back on track. ”
The three-time major champion then made an eye-opening confession.
“On the 14th [on Thursday]I thought the week was over,” Spieth said.
“Then I started feeling better and I thought, ‘Okay, I’m good now.’
Spieth originally injured his wrist at the Wells Fargo Championship in May 2023. He then missed AT&T Byron Nelson and battled injuries at Oak Hill during the PGA Championship.
Five months passed and Spieth aggravated the injury again after the Ryder Cup.
“It was a huge shock when I got injured again,” Spieth said of the setback at October’s Hero World Challenge.
“I was reaching for the toaster to make breakfast for my son and just propped it up on the shelf. ‘How can I prevent this from happening at other times?’ ‘, so it didn’t make any sense at all.and now i [going to be] There are still over two weeks left, so I’m confident that nothing like that will happen in the future. ”
But his wrist has been bothering him and continues to bother him.
The pain returned two weeks ago at the Valero Texas Open, but he once again played through the pain and finished tied for 10th. He then missed out on Augusta National.
Then, on Thursday, Spieth’s third shot happened on the 13th hole.
“Because my [wrist] The sheath is torn and doesn’t hold properly,” Spieth said.
“That’s one of them. It doesn’t affect me. [my] Speed and things like that.I am about to [have to] Please manage it. In other words, today, the tape, with the tape on it, was suppressing it. [the tendon’s] The ability to create all sorts of problems.
Spieth then finished the opening round with a 1-under 70 with five straight pars. He then received treatment and decided to stay in the tournament, turning heads on Friday with a 4-under 67. He finished the round with a long putt for birdie on the 18th hole.
“You can leave it as is. [wearing the tape]” Spieth added.
“I don’t really like wearing tape. I don’t know why, but it feels like playing racquetball or something. I’ll definitely do it the rest of the week, just in case.”
