Reading the fantasy football tea leaves of running back failures

We're only three weeks into the 2024 season, but there's already an air of panic in the football world. Fantasy Football community.

Andy Dalton has resurrected the Panthers, Jauan Jennings has led the way in scoring among wide receivers and their top tight end was yet another major disappointment, but nothing is more unsettling than watching a running back systematically lose his job.

No coach has yet to step up to the podium after a game and declare a change in the roster, but actions speak louder than words. A running back many thought could be trusted has had a dismal three games and is starting to show changes in snaps, touches and production. If you have space on your bench, it's time to appeal to waivers.

First of all, consider this a weekly reminder that Rachad White is an ineffective running back and that Bucky Irving should be added if he is available.

Sure, White was dealing with a groin issue this week and was expected to come off injured reserve and lead the Buccaneers backfield, but Irving has outplayed White in three straight games, and Irving's 7.5 carries average this season (White's 2.1) highlights just how efficient the rookie is as a player.

Zamir White and the Raiders backfield also warrants some rethinking. White's 3.2 yards per carry isn't as impressive as his Tampa Bay counterpart's, but the Raiders' Alexander Mattison looks like the better fantasy option based on usage.

Mattison has scored a touchdown in each of the first three games and has been used more in the passing game than White. More importantly, he's been relied upon to be the go-to guy near the goal line. If that trend continues, Mattison could end up leading the Las Vegas backfield.

But the situation that has everyone scratching their heads is happening in Denver. Obviously, coach Sean Payton is not a fan of Javonte Williams. Fumbles and inefficient rushes always hurt, but when Williams missed a shot from the 2-yard line on Sunday, Payton pulled him off the field and Jahlil McLaughlin found the end zone on the next play. Payton also opted to use Tyler Buddy at third to close out the win. Now, questions surround Williams and his snap count in Week 4.

The running back position is typically filled with turnover due to injuries, but sometimes you have to start reading the situation and predicting what the coach will do.

Do you bet on the NFL?

It would be a hasty move to remove either Whyte or Williams, but adding their “back-ups” is a smart and safe move. The cream always rises to the top, but at the moment we're just waiting for the beginning of separation.
