Morocco Migrants Surge at Spain’s Border Amid Immigration Crisis

Moroccan migrants celebrated after breaching the Spanish border enclave of Ceuta on Thursday, prompting an immediate military response from Spain. Over 60,000 migrants attempted the crossing, underscoring the growing border security challenges facing Europe. Experts are now examining the geopolitical implications and the pressure on local resources as military personnel work to restore order.

On Tuesday night, three renowned soccer players from Real Madrid stirred up controversy by declining to wear T-shirts that expressed solidarity with Ceuta, a city that has experienced a migrant crisis since late July.

Stars Kylian Mbappé, Ibrahima Konaté, and Brazil’s Vinícius Júnior took to the field at the Martinez Valero for a match against Elche, but they covered T-shirts emblazoned with the phrase “We are all Caballas,” which refers to the local residents of Ceuta.

For some context, Ceuta is an autonomous Spanish city located in North Africa, bordering Morocco. Recently, there was a significant influx of 72,000 illegal migrants from Morocco, wreaking havoc in the city, which has a population of approximately 85,000.

In response to the situation, numerous Spaniards have taken to the streets to protest how the government has handled the migrant influx. This discontent peaked earlier this month, with a Spanish opposition leader labeling the Prime Minister a “traitor” over his management of the crisis.

Real Madrid fans have rallied in support of Ceuta, notably displaying a large coordinated visual of Ceuta flags during a Champions League match against Inter Milan just last week. Following that, the club clearly stated its commitment to supporting Ceuta, sharing a message on its official site.

The players from both teams wore shirts with the message of solidarity at the start of the match between Elche and Real Madrid. However, while Mbappé and Vini Jr. were spotted with their shirts rolled up, covering the message, Konaté was seen holding his shirt instead. After the official team photo, Mbappé and Vini Jr. took off the shirts to reveal their game jerseys underneath.

It’s unclear why the three players opted out of participating in the solidarity demonstration. Their actions added tension to one of Spain’s most beloved soccer clubs.

Previously, Moroccan player Abdessamad Ezzalzouli faced backlash from his compatriots for wearing a shirt supporting Ceuta during a match with Real Betis and Villarreal. He received threats and negativity, as many interpreted it as a political statement against Morocco.

Ezzalzouli later clarified on Instagram that the shirt represented social support for a region in distress, regardless of nationality. He maintained, however, that he won’t apologize for his choice as he continues to be proud of his roots.

As it stands, many migrants are still present in the Spanish territory. The leader of Ceuta, Juan Jesús Vivas, remarked earlier this month that the events that unfolded were not merely a crisis but a breach of Spain’s territorial integrity.

Amidst rising tensions, Madrid saw over 50,000 protesters earlier this month expressing their frustration with Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez regarding the government’s handling of the migrant crisis.
