Real Strain: Obamas Attribute Marriage Issues to Trump

Obama Discusses Tensions in Marriage Amid Political Involvement

Former President Barack Obama opened up about the strain his continued political engagement has placed on his marriage with Michelle Obama. In a recent interview with The New Yorker, he attributed his ongoing involvement primarily to the political climate created by Donald Trump.

Obama shared that Michelle wishes he would slow down and enjoy life more, acknowledging the unique stress that comes not only from his dedication to public life but also from the pressure that the Trump administration brings. “It creates real tension in our household and frustrates her,” he admitted. He also noted that, while many former presidents have retired from politics, the demands placed on him remain substantial.

Despite this, Obama is trying to be mindful of Michelle’s feelings, although he recognizes why others look to him for leadership, even though no other ex-president has been as politically active as he has in the four election cycles since leaving office.

Michelle has had her own struggles in the limelight, recalling feelings of being “out of control” following Trump’s inauguration. “It was an honor to serve, but it was hard, and it was hard on my family, and it was hard on my daughters,” she remarked in her podcast.

Both Obamas have become more outspoken against Trump through various media channels, including speeches at Democratic National Conventions. Barack mentioned that aside from his political commitments, he has been busy writing and supporting the Obama Foundation.

Reflecting on his marriage, Barack revealed on Marc Maron’s podcast in 2025 that he experienced a significant rift with Michelle. He described feeling lost during a tough period in their relationship but indicated that things have improved since then.

Michelle has responded to speculation about their marriage, denying divorce rumors in April 2025, asserting that they are working through their challenges together.
