Reason behind Giants' decision to bench Abdul Carter explained

Abdul Carter’s Work Misstep

Abdul Carter dozed off during work hours.

The rookie first-round pick started on the bench for Sunday’s first series. He had missed a walkthrough last week due to sleeping at the team facility, as sources revealed. The Athletic was first to explain why Carter didn’t play the first six defensive snaps, although he managed to join in for the remaining 45.

“We made some mistakes this week that hurt our team,” Carter said following the game. “I understand that my actions come with consequences. They were there, and I have to accept that and just keep playing.”

Carter suggested reaching out to interim head coach Mike Kafka for more specifics, “if he chooses to share it.” However, Kafka opted not to disclose any details regarding his decision.

Another source informed that Carter, as a rookie, had frequently arrived late to meetings and other team commitments. Any disciplinary measures he faced from former head coach Brian Daboll were kept from the public eye.

There was an off-kilter atmosphere on Sunday when Kayvon Thibodeau was out due to a shoulder injury, which could have pushed Carter into the spotlight. In his absence, the Giants started Tomon Fox, who had been waived in August, and he recorded two pressures, a QB hit, and one tackle during the game.

Teammates seemed unfazed by Carter’s absence. “Just very professional,” said Brian Burns. “There wasn’t much to say about it. No big meeting took place or anything. It was handled between him and Kafka.”

After the match, Kafka spoke positively about Carter’s potential. “I appreciate Abdul and what he contributes to this team, especially his skill set. He has a passion for the game. I’m eager to see him in practice this week, working hard and continuing to develop into the great player I know he can be.”
