Anthony Joshua Hospitalized After Car Crash
Star boxer Anthony Joshua was hospitalized with minor injuries following a car crash that resulted in the deaths of two individuals on Monday morning. The accident occurred when the vehicle he was in lost control during an overtaking maneuver, as reported by the Federal Road Safety Corps of Nigeria.
The organization classified speeding and recklessness as serious traffic offenses, emphasizing the need for caution on the roads.
In a statement, Commander Shehu Mohammed, head of the Federal Road Safety Corps, expressed condolences to the families of those who died and wished for a swift recovery for Joshua.
According to Ogun State Police Commissioner Lanre Ogunlowo, a tire burst on the highway led to the driver losing control of Joshua’s car. However, the Federal Road Safety Corps did not mention any tire issues in their report.
Joshua, a 36-year-old British boxer, was the one behind the wheel of the Lexus. The front passenger and those sitting behind that seat were confirmed to have died at the scene after the vehicle collided with a parked truck, as reported by a Nigerian news outlet.
Video and photos from the scene depicted the wrecked car and showed a shirtless Joshua being assisted out of the vehicle by bystanders. The crash took place on a road considered to be among the most dangerous in Nigeria, according to local media sources.
Just ten days prior, Joshua had celebrated his first boxing win since 2024 by knocking out Jake Paul in a match in Miami. Reports suggested he earned $92 million for that appearance, and in a post-fight interview, he expressed pride in his performance, improving his record to 29 wins with 26 knockouts.
The Federal Road Safety Corps indicated that a total of five men were involved in the crash, which included Joshua’s security personnel in another vehicle. Joshua’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, mentioned the team is trying to contact him but refrained from speculating on his condition, noting that he appeared to be okay based on images from the scene. Hearn promised to provide updates as more information becomes available.
