Reasons behind Steve Gelbs' sudden departure from the broadcast during the Mets' remarkable comeback victory

Mets Overcome Adversity for Dramatic Win

This past Sunday, the Mets pulled off an incredible comeback, edging the Yankees 7-6 in a tense 10-inning game. However, amidst this thrilling victory, their dugout reporter, Steve Gelbs, had to make a hasty exit due to a family emergency involving his son.

Gelbs took to social media to share that he had to leave the game early after receiving troubling news. His son had a “scary fall” and had to be taken to the hospital.

“I had to unexpectedly leave the game after receiving a call that my son had a scary fall and was headed to the hospital,” Gelbs wrote. “Thankfully after a very long few hours he’s all recovered and doing well. He’s a tough kid,” he added, a sigh of relief evident even in text.

In a lighthearted exchange at the hospital, Gelbs’ son, clearly a fan of the Mets, asked, “Did the Mets win?” Which, under the circumstances, Gelbs thought was a bit ironic. Well, technically yes, but it was more complicated than that.

The game-winning moment came from Mets rookie outfielder Carson Benge. With one out and a runner on first base, he hit a pitch from Tim Hill into center field, scoring the decisive run.

The Yankees had five infielders on the field, but a collision between second baseman Max Schumann and shortstop Anthony Volpe resulted in a missed opportunity to make a play at home.

The Mets’ thrilling comeback began in the ninth inning, thanks to outfielder Tyrone Taylor. After starting the game strong, Taylor had gone hitless until he was hit by a pitch from closer David Bednar. He turned that into a home run down the left field line, tying the game at 6-6.

Benge basked in the postgame excitement, covered in celebratory gear, while giving an interview with radio broadcaster Pat McCarthy. He later remarked, “It’s always good to be willing to fight back.”

Steve Gelbs is usually a constant presence during postgame interviews, especially after such dramatic wins, and has become quite familiar with the celebratory traditions of the team.
