Falcons Unfazed by Zachariah Branch’s Arrest During Draft Week
The Falcons expressed no worries regarding Zachariah Branch’s arrest during the draft week, even as they selected him in the third round on Friday night.
General manager Ian Cunningham and head coach Kevin Stefanski shared with the media that the charges against Branch—two counts of obstructing a public sidewalk and interfering with law enforcement—didn’t sway their decision. “If you sit across from him, you understand his passion for the game,” Stefanski remarked. “He loves football, and coaches value players who really put in the effort every day.”
Stefanski continued, emphasizing that Branch not only fits their scheme but also aligns with their values. “He’s capable of lining up anywhere on the field, and that versatility is crucial.”
Branch, a receiver who had spent two years at USC before transferring to Georgia in the last season, was taken into custody early Sunday morning in Athens, Georgia.
According to the police report, Branch did not comply when officers instructed him to move off the sidewalk. He reportedly grinned at the officers while remaining in place, which led to his citation for blocking pedestrian access and impeding entry to surrounding businesses.
While Georgia’s football program has seen its share of arrests, particularly for driving offenses, Branch’s situation is distinct. In his last season with the Bulldogs, he posted impressive stats: 81 catches, 811 yards, and six touchdowns.
