Phil Simms has an interesting take on why the Giants switched from Russell Wilson to Jaxson Dart just three weeks into the season.
It wasn’t just about what was happening on the field; there were whispers in the stands, he noted.
“Did they really have to play him this week? Yes,” Simms said. “Just look at all those empty seats. [Giants owners] know about those empty seats too. Sometimes, you really need to listen to what the fans are saying.”
Simms believed Dart might only see time on the sidelines for a few games but found it “crazy” that it would take longer for him to play. “I was one of those fans,” he reflected. “In the first game, I was on board. By the third week, I was like, ‘When are they going to put me in?’ I imagine Jaxson Dart feels the same way.”
As Simms suggested, Giants fans grew impatient during the game against the Chiefs, explicitly calling for Dart to take over from Wilson.
“We want Dart!” they chanted as the veteran quarterback threw an incomplete pass to star receiver Malik Narvers, which only fueled the demand.
Giants head coach Brian Daboll seemed to catch the vibe, declaring Dart as the starting quarterback on Tuesday.
On Wednesday, Daboll expressed optimism for the rookie from Ole Miss, as the team prepares to move forward in the 2025 season.
Dart had limited playtime during the regular season, yet his preseason performance stood out. He completed 32 passes out of 32 attempts for a total of 372 yards, ran six times for 52 yards, and scored one touchdown, all while maintaining a clean record with no interceptions.
This Sunday, he aims to lead the Giants to their first win of the season against the Chargers at MetLife Stadium.
