Challenges of Plus-Size Travel

Traveling can be quite the hassle, especially for plus-size individuals. Kirsty Leanne, a travel influencer who speaks on this topic, highlights the difficulties faced when flying as a larger person.

When it comes to securing extra space, many plus-size travelers opt for purchasing an additional seat. However, Leanne notes that this solution doesn’t always work for her. She feels that it unfairly burdens those who haven’t reserved a second seat or don’t fit into larger front-row accommodations.

In a TikTok video that has gained over 1.3 million views, Leanne emphasized why she often refrains from booking two seats. She discussed the uncomfortable reality of cramped airplane seating, saying it’s more complicated than a simple “fit-for-all” situation.

This issue is just one of many that travelers of larger sizes encounter at cruising altitudes. Many are expressing their frustrations to airlines, hotels, and travel destinations, demanding more accommodating options for larger travelers.

Leanne, who founded Plus Sized Travel, shared her observations about the “emotional toll” imposed by companies that claim to be inclusive yet fail to meet the needs of heavier travelers.

She explained the financial strain of booking two seats, admitting that for many, spending extra on uncertain accommodations might not be feasible.

“Every airline has a different process for reserving extra seats, and, unfortunately, I’ve found that customer service can be quite confused about it,” she noted, reflecting on her experiences. “More often than not, check-in staff might not even be aware that reserving extra seats is an option, leading to a lot of unnecessary confusion.”

Leanne recounted a past experience traveling with an extra seat where staff were unclear on how to handle the reservation. This left her feeling anxious throughout the flight.

Despite some successes in booking second seats, she pointed out that this doesn’t work universally for all plus-size individuals. In closing, she expressed hope for changing perceptions and fostering understanding.

However, not everyone agrees with her viewpoint. Some commenters suggest that those who can afford to travel should also budget for extra space.

Others made snide remarks about the cost of additional seats, while support poured in from those who empathize with her situation. Many stressed that the problems of cramped seating are not exclusive to plus-sized travelers; there are various reasons why people may need more space while flying.
