Chargers’ Rough Start Raises Questions for Fantasy Managers

This season, many fantasy football managers had high hopes for the Chargers.

With Mike McDaniel stepping in as the offensive coordinator, expectations soared for a dynamic offensive unit. Fantasy enthusiasts eagerly picked quarterback Justin Herbert, anticipating big things with running back Omarion Hampton, wide receiver Ladd McConkey, and tight end Oronde Gadsden II.

However, the beginning of the season has been a struggle. The Chargers are currently 0-6, leaving numerous fantasy teams disappointed with underwhelming performance and lackluster stats.

But is it possible they’re not as bad as they seem? Just like Marvel’s “What If…?” series that has intrigued fans for years, football followers often ponder alternate paths and outcomes.

What if, after their bye week, the Chargers turn things around? Could the latter part of the 2026 season possibly see a resurgence in value from Chargers players?

Back in August, the excitement about their roster was palpable. Herbert was believed to excel in McDaniel’s strategy. Hampton was seen as a promising fantasy option due to his impressive physical abilities. McConkey was expected to dominate in the slot, while Gadsden was considered a threat for deep plays.

Instead, a complex scheme, issues with execution, and inconsistencies have muted their performance. Herbert’s passing yardage has decreased, Hampton’s effectiveness has waned while trailing in games, McConkey has been battling injuries, and Gadsden hasn’t seen much action in the red zone. And let’s not forget Quentin Johnston, whose athletic skills haven’t been fully utilized amidst this downturn.

For fantasy managers still holding on to hope—or savvy ones trying to take advantage of nervous owners—these players might be available for low trades or even on waivers in some leagues.

If the Chargers are to salvage their season, the upcoming schedule offers a great opportunity post-bye. They face the Rams, Texans, and Ravens in succession.

None of those defenses have lived up to the high expectations set for them in the preseason, showing weaknesses against pass protection, explosive runs, or seam routes. If McDaniel took his bye week to rethink his game strategy, this lineup could provide a perfect opportunity for a significant fantasy scoring uptick.

Of course, this is just speculation; a winless team won’t magically turn into a powerhouse without addressing fundamental issues. Yet, for those who believed in the talent and strategy drawn up earlier this season, the reasons for hope haven’t disappeared.

You don’t need to rush out and grab every Chargers player immediately, but the chances of these talented individuals bouncing back are certainly not nonexistent. Keep tabs on the waiver wire and consider making a few low-ball trade offers. You might just snag a game-changing combination for the second half of the season.
