Reasons the Dodgers still have faith in a Kyle Tucker comeback

Kyle Tucker took a moment to reflect on a question directed at him.

Lately, there’s been plenty of talk about the outfielder’s mental well-being, particularly during a disappointing season with the Dodgers, his first with the team. Fans, commentators, and even his manager have noted a lack of confidence and a visible frustration from the player who recently signed a hefty $240 million contract.

Over the weekend, when asked about whether this disappointing performance had affected him mentally, Tucker paused before responding.

“I mean, it’s been a struggle,” he eventually admitted. “I want to contribute to our team’s success and perform well for the clubhouse and the fans. I wish I could have done better this year.”

Despite facing personal lows—like a batting average of just .231 and an OPS of .689—Tucker surprised many by expressing optimism about the future.

“We’ve still got a month and a half left and the playoffs coming up, so it’s not over yet,” he remarked. “Just gotta keep grinding every day and strive to improve. Our team is phenomenal. I respect the guys here, and they’ve supported me through it all. I’m looking forward to finishing the year strong.”

Indeed, joining the two-time defending champion Dodgers also comes with opportunities for redemption. If Tucker can contribute in the playoffs, many of his regular-season struggles may be overlooked.

As his journey with the team continues, manager Dave Roberts shared a similarly positive outlook regarding Tucker’s progress, even after a recent subpar performance against the Pirates.

“I really feel we’ve turned a corner,” Roberts mentioned, noting that Tucker appeared to be more relaxed, both mentally and emotionally.

“We’re in a fight here, and I think he realizes that the only way is to keep looking forward,” Roberts added. “We need to navigate this together. I can’t quite explain it, but I have a good feeling about things I’ve been observing.”

During the series with the Pirates, Roberts noted the improvement in the quality of Tucker’s at-bats, highlighting that he had earned two walks while only striking out once.

In a positive moment during the game on Friday night, Tucker received a much-appreciated ovation from the crowd. The next day, he snapped a heartbreaking 0-for-26 slump at home with a significant two-run single that helped his team secure a 4-3 victory.

“I believe the last couple days is more of what we’re going to see moving forward,” Roberts stated.

After Saturday’s win, there was a noticeable moment in the locker room that highlighted Tucker’s growing comfort with the team.

As reporters gathered around him, teammate Miguel Rojas humorously interjected.

“You should ask him about his first hit in three homestands!” Rojas joked, gesturing toward Tucker. “Look what happens when you actually get a hit. King Tuck!”

Tucker chuckled at the friendly banter, acknowledging the joke in his media session.

“It felt great,” he said of the game-winning hit. “As Miggy pointed out, I hadn’t gotten a hit in the last three homestands.”

Then, returning to a hopeful tone, he turned his attention to the remainder of the season, holding on to the belief that there are brighter days ahead.

“I just aim to take it one at-bat at a time and focus on having quality opportunities,” he stated.

His manager and teammates still have faith in him, hoping for a turnaround as the season progresses.
