(NEXSTAR) — On Tuesday, November 11, there are a couple of key points to note, one of which might save you a trip to the mailbox.
It’s Veterans Day, a time when Americans pay tribute to their veterans. Since it’s a federal holiday, the post office will be closed.
The United States Postal Service has indicated that only Priority Mail Express will be delivered on Tuesday. Postmaster General and CEO David Steiner noted that self-service kiosks at some post offices will remain operational for tasks like buying stamps, printing postage, weighing packages, or tracking shipments.
Services like FedEx, UPS, and Amazon will still be available on this day.
Your local bank might also close, along with other services like trash collection and libraries. It’s a good idea to check their hours online or via phone ahead of time.
Aside from Veterans Day, this Tuesday is also the second national holiday introduced by President Trump this year.
The U.S. has recognized Veterans Day since it officially became a holiday in 1938. Initially called Armistice Day, it was established to mark the end of World War I when Germany and the Allies signed an armistice on November 11, 1918. After World War II, it became Veterans Day to honor all American veterans from various wars.
President Trump had initially proposed renaming Veterans Day to “World War I Victory Day,” but later clarification from White House press secretary Caroline Leavitt confirmed that the name would remain the same, introducing it as an additional declaration instead.
So, it seems Veterans Day will stay as is and will mostly remain unaffected by Trump’s announcements. If your workplace observes federal holidays, you can expect a day off. If not, business will continue as usual.
Interestingly, President Trump mentioned that the nation shouldn’t close for two “very important holidays” because there are already “too many holidays.” But on the bright side, I’ll be off from work (and not checking my mailbox) soon. Thanksgiving is just around the corner.
