Trump and DeSantis Support Census Overhaul
During a press conference, President Donald Trump and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis called for a revamp of the US census ahead of the midterm elections in 2026.
The Census Bureau includes undocumented immigrants in its count, affecting how congressional seats are allocated. Both leaders expressed their support for a bill that would change this practice to count only citizens.
Trump commented on the need for action, saying, “I know everything about it… Ron loves it, I love it. That’s something they have to do, and they have to get it back.” He also mentioned how census data impacts states and representation.
DeSantis pointed out that a fair census would mean California could lose five congressional seats, indicating his hope to see a new census take place. “My Congress will rezone those lines,” he added.
Trump expressed optimism about the bill’s chances, stating, “I think it will work very well… Everyone wants it.” He believes it is likely to pass and lead to positive outcomes.
Meanwhile, Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene shared her plans for a bill on social media. She stated that her proposal would mandate the Census Bureau to conduct a new census that specifically asks about citizenship, emphasizing the need to count only US citizens.
Greene explained that once the census is completed, the bill would direct states to begin the redistricting process based solely on the population of US citizens.
