Rebecca Gayheart Discusses Complicated Relationship with Eric Dane Amid ALS Battle

Rebecca Gayheart has shared insights into her “super complicated” relationship with her estranged husband, Eric Dane, who is facing amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).

On the podcast “A Wide Range of Ideas: Rachel Bilson and Olivia Allen,” Gayheart, who has two daughters, Billie, 15, and Georgia, 13, with Dane, talked openly about his health struggles. She explained her efforts to maintain a united front for their children during this difficult time.

“I’m definitely trying to show [my daughters] that we show up for people no matter what. He is our family and their father,” she expressed. “We do our best to face the situation with dignity. It’s quite complicated for me,” she added.

Gayheart filed for divorce in 2018 after 14 years together, but she later rescinded that application in March 2025, just before Dane revealed his ALS diagnosis publicly.

Despite being “separated for eight years,” Gayheart aims to remain optimistic for her daughters. “I don’t know if I’m doing it well or the right way. I’m just showing up for them. Time will tell,” she commented.

Reflecting on her experiences, she described them as “humbling.” She feels she has grown significantly and wants to impart to her children that while it’s important to support others, it’s equally crucial to care for oneself. “Life is just a fleeting moment with both good and bad vibes mixed in,” she noted.

Gayheart emphasized the importance of her daughters spending time with their dad. She wants them to avoid future regrets—like wishing they had asked him certain questions or simply being there for him more.

“We don’t know what the future holds,” she remarked. “It’s truly complicated for many reasons right now.”

In April 2025, Dane disclosed his diagnosis of ALS, a neurological disease that impacts nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. This illness not only affects muscle control but can also lead to issues with breathing and eating, as well as potentially dementia.

Dane has expressed gratitude for his supportive family during this challenging phase. “I consider myself lucky to continue working and look forward to returning to the set of ‘Euphoria’ soon,” he mentioned, urging for privacy as his family navigates this journey.

He has also discussed his illness with a sense of resilience. “I don’t think this is the end of my story,” he stated, adding that he feels hopeful thanks to the care he is receiving. He recalled noticing weakness in his right hand, which he initially attributed to fatigue from texting, before consulting specialists who ultimately diagnosed him.

Throughout these challenges, Dane remains focused on his daughters’ futures. He’s fiercely committed to fighting ALS, hoping to witness their milestones—like graduating college and starting families of their own. “I’m going to fight this with everything I have,” he declared.

Recently, he has been involved in advocacy efforts at the Capitol, aiming to expand access to treatments and push for the reauthorization of the ALS Act before it expires next year.

In the face of adversity, Dane has left a message for his supporters: “Stay true to your beliefs.” With support from loved ones and his drive, he aims to navigate this difficult path as best as he can.
