A campaign to recall “progressive” Oakland Mayor Shen Tao has gathered enough signatures to put it on the November ballot, organizers say, but they’re still gathering signatures to survive a challenge.
of San Francisco Chronicle report Saturday:
The Oakland United to Recall Shen Tao, known as OUST, has until July 22 to submit signatures. Election officials then need to verify there are enough signatures to trigger a recall, a process that could take up to two months.
Brenda Harbin-Forte, a former Alameda County Superior Court judge and leader of the recall effort, told the Chronicle that OUST has collected nearly 35,000 signatures since it began its efforts in February. She said the group has independently verified more than 25,000 signatures, which she said is the threshold for placing a recall on the November ballot.
But Harbin Forte said OUST will only file after collecting 40,000 signatures, more than the roughly 39,000 voters who listed Tao as their supporter. First choice The group is running for Oakland’s mayoral election in 2022. The group also plans to call for Thao’s resignation when they submit their petition, she added.
As Breitbart News points out, Mayor Tao has come under fire since firing Oakland Police Chief Leron Armstrong, who criticized “police budget cuts” and took a tough stance on crime.
Organizers know they have to be careful about signatures: A George Soros-backed recall effort against Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón was disqualified in 2022 by county officials who claimed there were too many invalid signatures.
Oakland voters are already collecting the signatures needed to put Soros-backed Alameda County District Attorney Pamela Price on the November ballot. Chronicle.
