Recap of Episode 6 of ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’: "The Morrow" (Season Finale)

Recap of Episode 6 from Knight of the Seven Kingdoms

In this episode, Dunk finds himself in Ashford Meadows, enjoying a meal and a couple of drinks with the lively Lord Lionel Baratheon. This marks the beginning of his journey as a hedge knight, avoiding entanglements in a historical feud that ended fatally for a member of the ruling family. Following the Trial of the Seven, Dunk leans against a tree at River Camp, wondering what twist of fate brought him here. Lionel, ever optimistic, insists that perhaps a drink could ease Dunk’s troubles.

During the season finale, titled “The Morrow,” Dunk questions his feelings around his involvement in Baelor Targaryen’s demise. While he wrestles with guilt, Lionel argues that his friend may have done the kingdom a favor. He reminds Dunk that those who fought alongside him also faced great risks, implying that maybe it’s not as grave as Dunk believes, and ultimately, what remains after a battle is just emptiness. As they discuss the looming war, Dunk is hindered by crutches as he prepares to attend Baelor’s funeral.

Dunk wrestles with the sudden loss of Prince Valar, Baelor’s son, feeling a deep emptiness where a response should be. He reflects on the notion that perhaps had he acted differently, the outcome could have shifted entirely. There’s a strange comfort in the idea that fate might reveal a purpose behind what’s happened, though he doubts that nobles truly see his worth compared to his late counterpart.

A lord expresses gratitude toward Dunk, noting his son’s growing admiration for him and suggesting that the boy become his squire. Dunk is hesitant but ultimately agrees, recalling his mentor, Sir Arlan of Pennytree, who often told stories that shaped his understanding of knighthood. As he grapples with what he perceives as a failure to teach the Targaryens properly, he intends to guide Aegon, the young squire, in a way he feels is right, despite feeling inadequate.

While preparing for their journey, Dunk feels conflicted about his role in recent events and is haunted by memories of Sir Arlan, who instilled in him the importance of completing one’s story. Aegon, who had been sheltered, now seeks adventure alongside Dunk, who, bruised yet joyful, gives Aegon orders instead of embraces as they ready themselves for whatever lies ahead.
