Recent Losses Among Congressional Democrats
Congressional Democrats are facing significant challenges as they grapple with recent losses.
The passing of Rep. Jerry Connolly (D-Va.) was announced on Wednesday, marking the third sitting member of the House Democrat Caucus to die this year.
Connolly, who was 75, follows the earlier losses of Rep. Sylvester Turner (D-Texas), 70, and Raul Grijalva (D-Ariz.), 77, since March.
All eight recent deaths of sitting lawmakers have been Democrats, which has shifted the balance of power slightly in favor of the Republicans.
This change in numbers has caused the GOP’s margin for error to widen, now requiring at least three votes to maintain control.
While some deaths have been sudden or linked to age, many were due to cancer or illnesses that the lawmakers were aware of prior to running for reelection.
Frustration is growing among Democratic insiders on Capitol Hill, who believe it is troubling that candidates with serious health issues, like Connolly, are still able to hold their seats when the political stakes are so high.
“It’s possible to mourn the recent losses of Democratic members while also recognizing that the party faces a problem with its incentives regarding aging leadership,” noted a Democratic congressional official.
These recent deaths have diminished the Democratic majority, which now stands at 220 to 215, tightening the legislative margins.
The House operates differently than the Senate, as vacancies are filled through special elections instead of gubernatorial appointments in most states.
House officials pointed out the absurdity of maintaining confidence in democracy while politicians face significant health issues that would question their ability to serve effectively.
This dilemma was brought to light again following Connolly’s death.
Connolly, diagnosed with esophageal cancer late last year, recently disclosed that the illness was advancing quickly.
Despite his diagnosis becoming known, some criticized the pressure on him to continue representing his district on the influential House Oversight Committee.
Progressive journalist Ken Klippenstein expressed dissent over the political environment surrounding Connolly’s situation.
The demise of Turner was abrupt, occurring shortly after a significant speech by President Trump in March, while Grijalva sought reelection despite facing a lung cancer diagnosis.
Moreover, the decline of Senator Diane Feinstein has posed additional complications for Democrats, especially within the Senate Judiciary Committee.
The circumstances surrounding Biden’s reelection efforts also raise concerns, particularly as he addresses health issues, including a recent prostate cancer diagnosis mentioned in his new book, “Original Sin.”
