It’s a classic debate that sports fans have been having for ages: which city or team has the most devoted fan base? There are certainly some frontrunners. Cities like Philadelphia, where Eagles fans are infamous for their intensity, come to mind. New York and Boston, with their East Coast energy, also show a deep-rooted passion for their teams.
Then you have the Chicago Bears supporters. Despite a long stretch of less-than-stellar performances, they still fill the aging Soldier Field, no matter how cold it gets outside. In the Southern U.S., particularly in Texas, football is practically a religion. High school stadiums boast capacities exceeding 20,000 seats, which is, well, pretty impressive.
Recently, Nielsen, the company best known for tracking TV ratings, decided it was time to settle the matter. They released a new “Local NFL Fandom Index,” which assesses all 30 NFL markets based on eight key metrics to find out which teams have the most invested fans.
These metrics cover a range of factors like apparel sales, attendance at live events, social media engagement, and TV viewership, among others. However, it’s a bit fuzzy what exactly “general interest levels” entails, and how these different metrics stack up against each other in determining rankings.
What stands out is that smaller and medium-sized markets generally boast the highest fan engagement. This isn’t too surprising when you think about it; smaller cities often have less competition for people’s attention, especially during football season. Places like Cincinnati, Baltimore, Pittsburgh, and Cleveland showed high scores because their residents are more likely to tune into local broadcasts and support the home teams.

There’s some thought-provoking data here. Smaller cities tend to thrive in fan engagement because there’s simply less to distract people. Cities like Cincinnati have high local television ratings and fan support, as fans can rally behind their teams without the interference of several other entertainment options vying for attention.
In contrast, larger markets like Miami, Los Angeles, and New York struggle a bit more. Fans in these cities often have multiple teams and entertainment avenues to choose from, making it tougher for NFL teams to capture the audience’s loyalty.
But when it comes to cities like Philadelphia, it’s noteworthy that their fan base ranks high despite some rough edges in reputation. While they might not lead in every single category, they do consistently score well across several metrics.
Winning clearly plays a huge role here, too. Without the New England Patriots’ dynasty, for instance, Boston likely wouldn’t fare as well. Kansas City performs strongly as the Chiefs are perennial contenders thanks to star players like Patrick Mahomes. And let’s not forget the Buffalo Bills. Their passionate fans are riding high on recent playoff appearances, which certainly bolsters their claim to the top fan base title.
So, while they may not have the Super Bowl trophy to show for their devotion, the Bills Mafia can at least back up their claim of being the best fans in the NFL with some solid data.
