Colombia Earthquake and Global Trends
On August 10, a significant magnitude 7.4 earthquake hit western Colombia, close to San José del Palmar in the Chocó Department. The disaster claimed the lives of at least 287 people, left thousands injured, and caused extensive damage to buildings in cities like Pereira and Cali.
Colombia’s earthquake isn’t an isolated event; it’s part of a broader pattern. Since May, several countries—including Venezuela, Indonesia, Mexico, and Japan—have all felt the tremors of significant earthquakes.
In a recent “Live Free” episode, Josh Howerton, the host and pastor at Lakepointe Church, along with co-host Carlos Erazo, discussed the biblical implications of the increase in seismic activity and related chaos.
“In Scripture, there’s really only one instance where Jesus explicitly mentions earthquakes,” Erazo noted. “That mention occurs within the context of end-times and His return.”
He cited Matthew 24:7-8, which outlines Jesus’ response to his disciples about signs heralding the end of the age: “Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places. All these are the beginning of birth pains.”
Erazo emphasized that the ongoing earthquakes around the world are, in fact, aligned with what Jesus foretold 2,000 years ago.
Though some skeptics might argue that earthquakes have always occurred, Erazo believes they overlook a significant difference. “Certainly, earthquakes have always existed, but we haven’t witnessed this frequency of them occurring along with everything else happening around the globe now,” he explained.
He also pointed to another end-time indicator from Matthew 24: “wars and rumors of wars.”
Recent studies reflect that in the last four to five years, the incidents of active armed conflicts involving governments have escalated. Erazo mentioned, “2025 is predicted to set a record high since World War II.”
He continued, “Moreover, in 2026, the number of countries involved in conflicts outside their borders nearly doubled over the last two decades. According to a report, ‘Global peace is at its lowest level since 2007,’” referencing the 2026 Global Peace Index from the Institute for Economics & Peace.
According to Erazo, these natural disasters and international tensions are not just coincidences; they are manifestations of biblical prophecy. “When you see earthquakes, wars, and the chaos around us, remember—Jesus said this would happen,” he remarked.
For many Christians, these events signal the hopeful news of Jesus’ imminent return. In contrast, for non-believers, Erazo warns, “This should be frightening.”
“Jesus talked about birth pains, and we might just be experiencing the initial stages of what will become more severe,” he cautioned.
