Recent NFL buzz about the Eagles, Patriots, Jets, Panthers, and others

Two important dates are on the NFL’s horizon.

The first is the 2026 NFL Draft, scheduled to kick off on Thursday, April 23.

The second is June 1, a critical moment for salary cap adjustments.

With these dates approaching, let’s delve into the current NFL rumors, starting with the June deadline.

As NFL free agency begins, AJ Brown’s name stands out as a likely trade candidate.

As the June 1 date draws near, the logistics behind a potential Brown trade are becoming clearer, sparking renewed interest. It appears league executives believe the Philadelphia Eagles receiver might be moving to the AFC East.

Mike Sand from The Athletic reported that several executives feel it’s “likely” the Patriots will make a move for Brown. “Executives expect the Patriots to acquire receiver AJ Brown from Philadelphia in June once the salary cap situation looks more manageable for the Eagles,” he wrote.

One executive remarked that trading Brown seems to hinge on the June 1 date, noting that his performance has reportedly diminished over the past three seasons.

New England recently picked up Romeo Doubs in free agency and has been linked to various wide receivers in this upcoming draft. However, the potential acquisition of Brown, especially considering his prior relationship with Mike Vrabel from their time at the Titans, has generated considerable buzz.

This trade could become a reality soon.

Plans for Caleb Williams’ Extension by Chicago Bears

The Chicago Bears have a bit of time left before needing to finalize an extension for Caleb Williams.

General manager Ryan Poles is awaiting a “green light” from Williams based on how he performs before moving forward.

In an interview with Chicago Sun-Times, Poles suggested that while things seem positive, they won’t rush until more clarity emerges.

Now in his third season, Williams is expected to show progression.

“That’s positive. Think of it like a stoplight. A rookie is at red, then turns to yellow. If you ignore it and keep going, it never fully transitions. We can make progress, but we need that green light,” Poles explained.

“I think we will see growth this year,” he added.

Regarding what he’s looking for, Poles identified “consistency” as a key factor that will influence the timing of their decision.

“What I’m aiming for is consistency,” he reiterated.

While waiting for cues to proceed, the Bears are starting to think about what an extension might look like.

“This is really a summer project,” Poles said. “Our salary cap expert, Matt Feinstein, is already laying the groundwork as we consider how to build the team.”

Jets Considering Abel Reese

The Las Vegas Raiders are expected to select Fernando Mendoza with the first overall pick, shifting attention to the New York Jets, who sit next in line.

However, the Jets may be eyeing the third pick held by the Arizona Cardinals.

ESPN’s Jets Insider Rich Cimini indicated that the organization is “leaning” towards selecting Ohio State defender Abel Reese. This is largely due to the Jets’ planned defensive scheme, which will involve multiple fronts, as shared by head coach Aaron Glenn during a recent meeting.

Flexibility is a priority for the players they are targeting.

Reese’s versatility stands out; during his last season at Ohio State, he played a mix of inside and outside linebacker to great effect.

Not only did Jets management attend Ohio State’s pro day to meet Reese, but they also shared dinner with him. It seems the Jets are genuinely interested in bringing him on board.

AJ Brown is not the only wide receiver attracting attention; Brandon Aiyuk is also in discussions.

The Washington Commanders appear to be a likely destination for Aiyuk, especially given their past chemistry at Arizona State, but their time is running out to finalize any trade.

According to ESPN’s John Keim, while the Commanders indicated there’s a possibility of dealing him, they’re also aware that the San Francisco 49ers may release Aiyuk due to lingering issues between him and the team. Nonetheless, the Commanders aren’t simply waiting; with the seventh pick, they might seek to find a capable receiver in the draft.

Carolina Panthers Look to Strengthen Roster

The Carolina Panthers made a surprising push for the NFC South title, even as other teams floundered.

Despite being eliminated in the Wild Card round, the franchise is optimistic and sees the upcoming draft as essential to maintaining its momentum.

Sitting at the 19th pick, they have various choices. Will they opt to help their young quarterback or bolster a defense that needs reinforcements?

Head coach Dave Canales mentioned that both positions are currently being evaluated.

“It’s about finding what player can make a real impact for us,” Canales noted. “It could be a wide receiver, a tight end, or even a safety. We want to ensure we land someone valuable.”

He highlighted the importance of dynamic safeties that could enhance their defensive strategy. Yet there’s still uncertainty about where the top prospects fall.

“But this is a chance for us to secure a valuable player at this position,” he remarked.

Options for wide receiver and edge seem to be the most pressing needs. Oregon safety Dillon Thieneman is gaining attention, although he might go ahead of the Panthers’ pick. Tight end Kenyon Sadik from Oregon is also being watched closely, with some mock drafts suggesting he could land on the Panthers’ roster.

Maxx Crosby Trade Speculation

Maxx Crosby’s intended trade to the Baltimore Ravens fell through, yet he still identifies as a “lifelong Raider.”

But could the Patriots take a chance on him?

Ben Volin from the Boston Globe mentioned that the Patriots might reconsider a trade, given their salary cap flexibility and recent needs.

New England lost K’Lavon Chaisson and had a shortage of sacks leading up to the Super Bowl. “Don’t dismiss the Patriots picking up Maxx Crosby now that his deal with the Ravens didn’t go through,” Volin suggested.

“With his surgically repaired knee, Crosby’s price might decrease, making it a possible opportunity for the Patriots,” he added.

Jeremiah Love Rumors

Jeremiah Love from Notre Dame is generating buzz as a top talent in this year’s draft, thanks to his unique combination of skills and potential value.

Even with a trend of running backs dropping in the draft, Love’s standout abilities as a receiver might push him up the board.

Initially, the Kansas City Chiefs seemed like a solid landing spot for him, but after acquiring Kenneth Walker III, their direction changed.

There was speculation that they doubted Love would still be available when their pick came up.

Recent chatter suggests Love could go as high as the fourth pick, especially given the Titans’ evolving defensive strategies.

What about the Cardinals at pick No. 3?

On a recent podcast, Todd McShay discussed how the running back could make a significant impact for Arizona, despite initial expectations.

“I know there’s interest in Arizona for Love; they’re considering moving up in the draft,” he specified.
