Newly Discovered Dr. Seuss Story to Mark America’s 250th Birthday
A recently found Dr. Seuss tale featuring the Cat in the Hat will debut ahead of America’s 250th anniversary.
The book, titled “Sing the 50 United States,” is the first complete manuscript attributed to Dr. Seuss since “What Pet Should I Get?” was discovered in 2015, as reported by CTV News. This manuscript, penned by Theodor Geisel (Dr. Seuss), was uncovered earlier this year in the archives at the Geisel Library at the University of California, San Diego. It aims to assist children in memorizing the names of all 50 states.
Parts of the newly rediscovered story show the Cat in the Hat leading readers through a whimsical exploration of American history and geography, transforming memorization into engaging rhymes.
“You have to use your head to sing 50 America,” the Cat exclaims, launching into a cheerful roll call. “Massachusetts. Minnesota. Missouri and Montana. Miss Mississippi. Maryland! Michigan and Maine!”
Susan Brandt, the president and CEO of Dr. Seuss Enterprises, remarked that the discovery offers a unique insight into Geisel’s imaginative process. “Finding Ted’s new work is like uncovering a time capsule of his creativity,” she stated.
Brandt further noted, “‘Sing the 50 United States’ showcases his limitless creativity, linguistic brilliance, and enduring ability to engage young readers globally. At such a significant milestone, we are thrilled to share this new Dr. Seuss gem with audiences nationwide.”
Along with the manuscript, archivists found Geisel’s original cover sketch and notes for art direction. To complete this unfinished project, illustrator Tom Brannon created new illustrations that reflect Seuss’ distinct style.
Random House Children’s Books is set to publish the book with an initial print run of 500,000 copies on June 2, 2026, just ahead of the nation’s 250th celebration.
