Recently elected German mayor attacked with a knife in the context of increasing political violence

Incident Involving New Mayor in Germany

A newly elected mayor in a West German town faced serious danger on Tuesday after being discovered at home with multiple stab wounds to her neck and abdomen.

Reports indicate that 57-year-old Iris Stusser was dragged inside her residence following an attack by several men. This incident occurred late last month, just after she secured her position with the Central Left Social Democrats.

Current investigations have not ruled out potential involvement from family members, prompting authorities to question Stusser’s son and 17-year-old daughter.

Police cordoned off the area around her home to begin an immediate investigation, though it remains unclear who alerted emergency services to the scene.

Mayor Stusser, who recently took office in a town of about 20,000 residents near the Belgium-Netherlands border, was airlifted to a nearby hospital.

The attack follows a contentious election campaign where she ousted the previous conservative mayor. While the motive behind the stabbing hasn’t been established, the attack adds to a troubling trend of violence against politicians in Germany.

Concerns have been raised regarding safety, with approximately 60% of German politicians reporting instances of violence during their tenure. In response to the attack, German Chancellor Fredrik Meltz labeled it an “abhorrent act” on social media.

“We are worried about the life of Mayor Iris Stusser and genuinely hope for her recovery. My thoughts are with her family,” Meltz commented, urging for a thorough investigation.

As authorities continue their inquiries, the community is left reeling from this shocking incident.
