Drama at Formula 1 Canadian Grand Prix
The Formula 1 Canadian Grand Prix wrapped up under safety car conditions, with George Russell in the lead, followed closely by Max Verstappen as the race approached its conclusion.
Despite the excitement of the podium celebrations, there was an unusual hush in the media area, and Red Bull did not voice any objections at the time.
Following the race, tensions arose when Red Bull announced protests against Russell. Officials from the race convened with representatives from Russell’s team and Mercedes, as well as Red Bull, for a circuit hearing at 5:50 PM local time.
The controversy stemmed from a late-race incident involving McLaren teammates Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, which led to Norris’s retirement and the deployment of the safety car on lap 67.
While the rest of the drivers trailed behind the safety car, Russell unexpectedly slowed down, which allowed Verstappen to overtake him briefly.
Both drivers quickly communicated with their teams; Verstappen pointed out Russell’s sudden deceleration, while Russell accused Verstappen of passing him unfairly.
Each team informed their drivers of the situation, cautioning them about erratic behavior from others in the field.
Additionally, radio exchanges revealed Verstappen’s claims that Russell “actively applied the brakes,” while Mercedes reported that over ten cars fell behind the safety car due to the incident.
A key aspect of this protest is that Verstappen currently has 11 penalty points. If the protest leads to further complications for him, it could have significant implications for his race eligibility moving forward.
This isn’t the first instance of Red Bull lodging a post-race protest against Russell this season. At the Miami Grand Prix earlier in May, they protested him for allegedly failing to slow under a yellow flag, although that claim was dismissed by race officials.
Interestingly, that previous protest led to a notable scene at Hard Rock Stadium, where Russell and Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff approached Red Bull to discuss the matter in person.
Now, all eyes are on the developments surrounding this latest protest from Red Bull against Russell.
