Red Bull New York Signs Goalkeeper Ethan Horvath

Red Bull New York has officially signed American goalkeeper Ethan Horvath, addressing a crucial need as the preseason approaches, according to reports.

Horvath, previously with Cardiff City in the English Football Championship, has played 97 matches during his time there. Additionally, he has international experience, having represented the U.S. men’s national team 10 times since his debut in 2016.

Reports from earlier indicated that he was making the move, and now it’s confirmed.

The 30-year-old spent the first part of the English football season on loan at Sheffield Wednesday, with previous stints at Nottingham Forest and Luton Town throughout his career.

Interestingly, Horvath has also played in Norway and Belgium, showcasing his diverse experience. His move to Harrison, N.J., raises questions about who will take the position in goal for RBNY this season, particularly after the club made Carlos Coronel a free agent.

Another contender for the goalkeeper position is late-season signing John McCarthy, while the club also has young talents Aidan Stokes and AJ Marcucci in its ranks.

Julian de Guzman, the club’s head of sport, hinted at a recent press conference that they were “very close” to finalizing plans for the upcoming season.

Red Bull New York kicked off its preseason on Wednesday with an exhibition against USL League 1’s Sarasota Paradise in Florida.

The team is currently navigating a transition period, with de Guzman and new head coach Michael Bradley leading the way. Horvath is the latest signing in what has been a busy offseason that has also seen Cade Cowell, Robert Voloder, and Justin Choi join the club.

However, the team saw some departures too, as notable player Lewis Morgan, along with Daniel Edelman, Sean Neils, and Peter Stroud, were released.

During a media session on Thursday, the new head coach emphasized that the club is continually assessing the roster. He stated, “Without a doubt, we are constantly discussing to find the best way to make the team better and more complete. This will always be ongoing.”

RBNY has five more preseason matches lined up before kicking off the regular season in Orlando.
