New Season, New Dynamics for Red Bulls
Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting has experienced playing for some of the biggest clubs in the world, so he certainly understands the importance of building chemistry with teammates. However, that kind of connection doesn’t happen instantly.
The integration of Choupo-Moting with newly signed wingers Jorge Rubalcaba and Cade Cowell will be critical as Red Bull New York aims to recover from a disappointing 2025 season, marked by significant changes during the offseason.
Last season, the Red Bulls’ offense struggled, landing them in the lower half of the league and ending their playoff streak of over a decade.
This season, under the guidance of new head coach Michael Bradley, Rubalcaba and Cowell will join Choupo-Moting—who led the team with 17 points last year—in a more dynamic, possession-focused offense.
Fans will get their first glimpse of this revamped attack when the Red Bulls kick off the 2026 MLS regular season against Orlando City SC this Saturday.
The preseason has offered the new trio a chance to gel before the regular season begins. Choupo-Moting acknowledged that while it takes time to develop chemistry, he is optimistic about their shared goals. “What’s essential is that we’re all aligned and focused on the same objectives,” he explained. “It’s not about who scores the most; it’s about working together as a team to achieve success.”
During a media event, Rubalcaba expressed excitement about playing with both Cowell and Choupo-Moting, sharing that it’s been a valuable learning experience. Although their sample of teamwork is limited, Cowell noted he quickly began to recognize Choupo-Moting’s movements in the box, even adding that he sometimes doesn’t need to look to find him.
“I think our collaboration is going really well, which is exciting,” Cowell remarked.
Recently, both Cowell and Rubalcaba displayed their skills in a preseason match against Dinamo, with Rubalcaba striking powerful shots, thanks to a well-placed cross from Cowell.
Choupo-Moting discussed anticipating plays based on movements from his teammates. “As a striker, I try to stay a step ahead,” he said, emphasizing the importance of understanding when and where to make runs to avoid being caught offside.
While the Red Bulls’ offensive strategy seems promising, adjustments are still needed throughout the team, especially defensively. The club is looking for another center-back to complement veteran Robert Voloder and defender Justin Choi.
“Creating a solid team that can face adversity is crucial. The work to build a cohesive unit is ongoing,” Bradley stated. “Yes, we’re excited for the season to start this weekend, but improving and developing as a team is a continual process.”
