Red Cross Criticizes Hamas Over False Recovery of Hostage Remains
The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) expressed rare criticism of Hamas on Tuesday after the group falsely claimed to have recovered bodies that belonged to missing hostages.
According to reports, Hamas excavated a site, retrieved human remains from a building, reburied them, and then contacted the Red Cross, falsely presenting the remains as those of hostages.
The remains were then handed over to Israel in a coffin. However, after a forensic analysis, it was found that the body belonged to a previously murdered hostage, whose parts had been collected two years earlier.
This entire incident was captured by an Israel Defense Forces (IDF) drone, leading to significant outrage in Israel.
The Red Cross condemned Hamas for manipulating the recovery process. A statement indicated, “Our team merely observed what seemed to be the retrieval of remains, without prior knowledge of the circumstances surrounding it.” They added, “It is irresponsible to stage a false recovery, especially at a time when so many families are desperately waiting for news about their loved ones.”
The ICRC reiterated its call for respectful handling of remains, urging adherence to international humanitarian law and forensic standards. They emphasized that the return of bodies to families should never be a matter of political leverage.
The Red Cross has faced criticism from Israeli sources for not visiting prisoners in Gaza, as mandated by international law, and for allowing them to be held captive, which seems rather hypocritical. One former hostage even noted he was held for 12 hours in an area under a Red Cross office in Gaza.
