Red Lobster Closes Iconic Tallahassee Location After 56 Years

Red Lobster has announced the closure of its oldest operating restaurant, located on North Monroe Street in Tallahassee, Florida, after serving the community for over half a century. The last day of service will be May 24th.

In a statement, Red Lobster expressed that this particular restaurant has played a significant role in its history and local community. “This restaurant holds a special place in Red Lobster’s history,” they mentioned, reflecting on its long-standing presence.

It’s important to note that closures aren’t uncommon; Red Lobster evaluates the performance and lease agreements for its locations regularly. The decision to shut down this restaurant, they say, is based on specific business considerations unique to this site.

The acting general manager shared with reporters that the team at the restaurant, which has always been exceptional, despises the thought of closing. “We hate to close,” they remarked.

Red Lobster expressed gratitude to its patrons and staff for their support over the years, acknowledging the special bond formed within the community.

This closure comes as the chain faces significant challenges. Earlier, Red Lobster shut down numerous locations across the U.S. and filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in May 2024. Financial trouble has been attributed, in part, to the decision to offer a permanent Endless Shrimp promotion.

After restructuring, RL Investor Holdings LLC took over the chain, and Damola Adamolekun has been appointed as the new CEO. Under his leadership, the brand is attempting to recover from a troubled reputation and streamline its operations. He shared with a publication that taking on such a damaged brand is a considerable challenge but one that they are committed to addressing.

Recently, Red Lobster has introduced new menu items, including Lobster Pappardelle Pasta and Bacon Wrapped Scallops, in a bid to attract more customers. Still, they’ve acknowledged that certain promotions, like the Endless Shrimp deal, can lead to operational strain.

As the Tallahassee location prepares for its final days, many will remember it as a cherished part of their dining experiences over the decades.
