The Boston Red Sox and Milwaukee Brewers were involved in a bench-clearing brawl at Fenway Park during Sunday’s game.
No fistfights occurred, but Red Sox pitcher Chris Martin and Brewers first base coach Quintin Berry got into an altercation that nearly led to a collision after the top of the seventh inning.
As the frame ended, Martin was seen saying something to Berry, who apparently took issue with what he said. Berry shouted back at Martin, causing the tall right-hander to turn around as coaches and players began to intervene.

Martin wasn’t pleased that the Brewers bunted twice in the inning, even though it was a 1-1 game, and after the game, speaking to reporters, Martin implied he said something distasteful to Berry on his way back to the Boston dugout.
“I probably said something under my breath heading into that inning, and I’ll let you decide what it was,” Martin told reporters. “It was momentum, they bunted twice, and I didn’t like it. I know it’s part of the game, but you can’t help it. I told them that.”
“I mean that as a compliment, to be honest. Maybe they don’t think they’re going to get a hit. They’re taking good swings at the pitches. I don’t know. In this league, I think you’re supposed to swing the bat.”
Either way, everyone was caught up in it as both teams’ bullpens sprinted to the infield where the skirmish was happening.

Berry and Martin were shouting at each other and both had to be subdued, but thankfully things didn’t escalate enough to require disciplinary action from the league office.
It’s also worth noting that Berry and Martin have been teammates in the past and understand each other’s competitive spirit.

In the end, Boston won on their home turf with a one-run single by Jarren Duran in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Duran said after the fight that he had never seen Martin so angry.
“When you clear the bench, it kind of motivates everybody a little bit,” Duran said, via NESN.[Martin] He was making everybody excited. He was angry. I’ve never seen him like that. He’s always been a calm, cool guy.”
Fenway Park has seen worse bench clearings — just ask the New York Yankees — and the Brewers have been no stranger to brawls this season, with Milwaukee and Tampa Bay Rays getting into some pretty hectic fights last month that resulted in multiple players being suspended for their involvement.

The Red Sox were able to win the game, but the Brewers won the first two games of a three-game series on the road, preventing the Red Sox from being swept.
