Change is coming for the Red Sox, who have not played in the postseason for three straight seasons.
Boston is without six coaches and staff members after finishing 81-81. According to the Boston Globe.
According to reports, first base and infield coach Andy Fox, bullpen coach Kevin Walker, assistant hitting coach Luis Ortiz, mental skills coach Ray Fuentes, trainer Ben Chadwick and bullpen catcher Mani Martinez He is not scheduled to return for the 2025 season.
According to the paper, pitching coach Andrew Bailey, bench coach Ramon Vazquez, hitting coaches Pete Fatze and Ben Rosenthal, game planning coordinator/catching coach Jason Varitek, and third base coach Kyle Hudson have been scheduled for the season. He will reportedly return to the staff of coach Alex Cora, who signed a contract extension midway through the season. .
Teams often change their staff after disappointing results, and several, if not all, of these coaches may be under contract or have expired .
These changes come after Chief Baseball Officer Craig Breslow's first year on the job, as he led the Red Sox back to the playoffs for the first time since their surprise 2021 ALCS berth. He is tasked with finding the right combination of coaches and staff to make that happen.
Fox, who won the 1996 World Series championship with the Yankees, joined the Red Sox in 2011.
After serving as field coordinator for two seasons, he became the team's first base coach for the 2024 season for the first time.
Walker, also a former MLB player, spent 11 seasons as a minor league pitching coach before being promoted to assistant pitching coach prior to the 2020 season.
A year later, he became a bullpen coach.
According to the paper, Martinez was just part of Red Sox history when he caught David Ortiz's bases loaded out of the bullpen in the 2013 ALCS game against the Tigers.
This upcoming offseason will be a critical one for the team, as the fan base is restless amidst the team's struggles and owner John Henry doesn't appear to be willing to spend as much as he has in the past.
“We can no longer ask our fans to look to the future and think about a Red Sox team that can win a division championship and advance in the postseason,” Breslow said after the season ended. Transcribed by MLB Trade Rumors.
“We must talk about the decisive actions we are taking now to put a better team on the field in 2025.”
