Red Sox place Roman Anthony on injured list in recent setback for 2026

Red Sox Young Star on Injured List

The Boston Red Sox’s season seems to be spiraling downwards, and now they face the challenge of coping without one of their promising players.

The team has announced that outfielder Roman Anthony will be on the 10-day injured list due to a sprained right wrist. This decision was made public on Thursday.

The 21-year-old picked up the injury during his first at-bat in the Red Sox’s narrow 5-4 victory against the Tigers on Monday. He has since returned to Boston for an evaluation by a hand specialist.

Interim manager Chad Tracy mentioned that Anthony requires time on the injured list, explaining that he hasn’t shown enough recovery in recent days. “It still hurts,” he noted, emphasizing the dilemma of playing without their full roster. “I think the question is, how much longer are we willing to play shorthanded?”

It’s worth mentioning that Anthony hasn’t picked up a bat since that game on Monday. He was seen sporting a wrist brace, which is probably not the best sign.

“I’m not where I want to be, naturally,” Anthony remarked. “But I have to focus on improving every day. Hands can be tricky, and honestly, I’ve never dealt with this kind of issue before. On the bright side, it’s a relief to hear it’s nothing serious.”

He added, “Once my time on the IL is up, I expect to be ready for the next game.”

This season hasn’t started particularly well for Anthony, who has a batting average of .229 and just one home run over 30 games.

The injury hits right after a significant shakeup in the organization, as the Red Sox dismissed manager Alex Cora and four coaching staff members following a rough 10-17 record.

It seems players were not happy about the firings, especially considering it came right after a commanding 17-1 victory against the Orioles.

Shortstop Trevor Story expressed that the management’s reasoning for Cora’s dismissal felt insufficient. “Some of the best coaches in the world never got a fair chance,” he commented.

Pitcher Garrett Whitlock added, “They made it clear that we are getting paid to play, so we just need to focus on that.”

Currently, the Red Sox find themselves tied for last in the American League East with a record of 16 wins and 21 losses.
