Boston Red Sox Visit the White House During D.C. Trip
The Boston Red Sox, currently in Washington, D.C. for a three-game series against the Nationals, took the opportunity to act as tourists. With no games on Thursday, several players made their way to the White House for a visit with President Donald Trump.
Players including Trevor Story, Justin Wilson, and Garrett Whitlock were among those who met with Trump during this outing.
The team’s spokesperson mentioned, “The team toured the White House today as part of a family road trip to D.C.” It’s not typical for sports teams to visit the president unless they’re celebrating a championship, but it seems a special exception was allowed this time.
Interestingly, Red Sox manager Alex Cora had previously been critical of Trump; he notably skipped a White House visit in 2019 after the team won the World Series, citing his concern for Puerto Rico’s recovery from Hurricane Maria. Speaking on “The Mayor’s Office” podcast, Cora reflected, “At that moment, I felt uncomfortable celebrating at the White House when so many were still struggling.”
Cora expressed that it felt strange to celebrate while his home country was facing hardships. He continued, “We are part of the United States, and while there’s support, there’s still work to be done.” Mookie Betts also chose not to attend the White House visit in 2019 but participated in a celebration for the Los Angeles Dodgers as their reigning champion earlier this year.
The series between the Red Sox and the Nationals kicks off on Friday at 11:05 AM.
