Red Sox promote prospect Marcelo Mayer following Alex Bregman’s injury

Red Sox Call Up Marcelo Mayer

It looks like the Red Sox are ready to bring up Marcelo Mayer. With third baseman Alex Bregman sidelined due to an injury, the timing seems right for Mayer’s MLB debut.

Mayer, who was the fourth overall pick in the 2021 amateur draft, ranks as the second-best prospect in the Boston organization and the eighth in all of Major League Baseball.

There were hints that Mayer’s call-up was on the horizon when he wasn’t listed in the Triple-A Worcester lineup last Saturday. He played shortstop in the minors but could shift to third base if the team decides not to rush Alex Bregman’s return or opt against using designated hitter Rafael Devers for now.

When asked about the possibility of being called up, Mayer shared it’s something he constantly thinks about. “Every day, as a player, that’s what I’ve dreamed of since I was a kid watching games at home with my family. It’s why you put in the hard work,” he said earlier this week.

The top picks of the 2021 draft included names like Henry Davis (Pirates), Jack Leiter (Rangers), and Jackson Jobe (Tigers), all of whom have already reached the majors. Mayer’s journey to this point has had its challenges, including an injury that slowed his progress.

In Triple-A, he posted a .271 batting average with a .347 on-base percentage and a .471 slugging rate, which shows he can contribute effectively at the next level. There’s a sense of excitement around his potential, and fans are curious to see how he will perform when he finally steps onto the big stage.
