The Boston Red Sox entered the offseason looking for big changes — at least that’s what fans believed.

Instead, new general manager Craig Breslow has been conservative with additions to the roster for the 2024 season, and fans weren’t the only ones who seemed dissatisfied.

That goes for the players too.

Red Sox All-Star Rafael Devers spoke to reporters at spring training on Tuesday and didn’t hide his thoughts on how the offseason went.

“Everyone in this organization wants to win, but [Red Sox leadership] We have to make adjustments to put our players in a better position to win,” Devers said through Red Sox translator Carlos Viloria.

“Everyone knows what we need. You know what we need, and they know what we need.” There are some things we can’t say, but everyone who knows our organization and knows the game knows what we need.”

Devers signed a 10-year, $313.5 million contract last offseason to remain the face of the Sox, meaning he will be in Boston for years to come, making sure the best team is assembled each season. I’d like to see it happen.

The Red Sox have a clear need for pitching, especially in their starting rotation. The current starting five appears to be Brayan Bello, Lucas Giolito, Nick Pivetta, Cutter Crawford, and Tanner Hawk. Last season, not a single pitcher had an ERA below 4.

Jordan Montgomery and current National League Cy Young Blake Snell are both still available on the free agent market, but there are no rumors that the Red Sox are actively pursuing them.

Owners made changes to bring Breslow in after Chaim Bloom was relieved of his duties as the team finished last in the AL East last season (78-84).

However, Mr. Breslow has not made any notable achievements since taking office. Instead, they traded outfielder Alex Verdugo to the American League East rival New York Yankees, while also trading Chris Sale to the Atlanta Braves for Vaughn Grissom.

They acquired Tyler O’Neal from the St. Louis Cardinals, presumably to fill Verdugo’s outfield hole, and the veteran Giolito signed a two-year, $35 million contract with Fenway.

Closer Liam Hendricks, who was diagnosed with and overcame stage 4 non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in January 2023, also signed a two-year contract worth $10 million, but is still dealing with recovery from Tommy John surgery starting Aug. 2. It’s inside.

Expectations for the Red Sox’ 2024 season are not that high, as the AL East is expected to be even more competitive this season.

That’s not what you want to hear from a player like Devers, who has been to a World Series ring since 2018 and just recently reached the ALCS in 2021. But that’s the reality this season.

And while Devers didn’t give too much away, he did say enough to point out players’ dissatisfaction with the way Boston’s offseason went.
