Red Sox outfielder Tyler O’Neill hasn’t played in a game since early August, but it appears the reason is a bit more gruesome than initially thought.
O’Neal said Wednesday he had been hospitalized for four days with the injury that has sidelined him since Aug. 2.
The two-time Gold Glove winner resumed baseball activities on Tuesday and is traveling with the team.
“It was a pretty scary few days,” O’Neill said. [Massachusetts General Hospital] The doctors and medical staff over there treated me really well over the weekend and into yesterday, so I’m feeling much better and I’m happy to be doing well.”
Boston placed O’Neal on the injured list on Aug. 7 with a foot infection after missing several days with an unspecified illness.
At the time, O’Neill and his team were confused about what was going on.
“I [O’Neill] “He said, ‘Alex, I have no idea what happened,'” Red Sox manager Alex Cora said. According to MLB.com:. “when [athletic trainer Jon Jochim] He was in a bad way when I saw him in Texas. And I think it was on the last day that his leg was very swollen. He’s been getting treatment and is doing everything he can with the medical staff to deal with the condition. …It just happened. He doesn’t know. He wakes up in the morning. [his leg] It was big.”
Cora suggested O’Neill was “frustrated” by the latest setback in an injury-plagued season.
“It’s taking time and I’m sure he’s frustrated,” Cora said Tuesday. From the Boston Globe. “This has just come out of nowhere and been a long time coming. We’ve got to get him going baseball-wise and we haven’t done anything yet.”

This marks O’Neal’s third time on the injured list this season after missing time in May with knee inflammation and undergoing stitches after a collision on the field in April.
O’Neal has struggled with injuries the past few seasons and has only played in 168 games in 2022 and 2023 combined.
He has played in 80 games this season, batting .268/.357/.544 with 22 home runs and 45 RBIs.
